Roberta Keesick is Anishinabekwe mother, grandmother, hunter, trapper, and protector of our people.
Roberta has always been active in protecting our way of life as a people-The Anishinabek. Many times she has taught me to stand up for my rights, even if it is in a restaurant where I am being treated bad by a waitress. I was unable to speak up before. I was silent and did not utter a word. I took the crap people gave me and I swallowed it too. I was very down in my heart and at times did not understand my link to this earth and why I was here. Without Roberta's encouragement, I would not have accomplished all that I have accomplished for my children and myself.
Roberta is one of those people that will always be in the background and is one of the invisible organizers of defending the land actively and hands on efforts. But you will never hear about her....well I guess now you have heard about her,
A few years ago, she was building a log cabin for her hunting grounds and the MNR charged her for not getting a permit to make a building. We felt that Anishinabek do not need permits for this. We have been here since time immemorial and we do not need permits for anything.
You can find out more about her case on facebook under support Roberta Keesick in facebook or email her at gwawich@gmail.com
Her trial will be in Red Lake Ontario October 20, 2009
