KI permanently prevents platinum mine from developing on its lands

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug

Big Trout Lake, Ontario -- December 14, 2009.

Chief Donny Morris said, "I consider the decision of Platinex to not proceed with mining exploration in our territory as a major vlctory. My community was determined to stop Platinex and the Ontario government from arbitrarily imposing a mine at Nemeigusabins Lake." Chief Donny Morris said, "But what is more important to the people of Ontario is what kind of arrangement the Ontario government will ultimately make with the indigenous peeples of Kitchenuhmaykoosib (KI):" The Chief and Council and Ontario government agreed to develop a Memorandum of Cooperation. Chief Donny Morris said, "The Memorandum of Cooperation will become a model of how future problems like this will not happen again. The province needs to know that mining is a very serious issue for us. We went to jail to protect our land and we were prepared to go back to jail if necessary. I think the province needs to recognize that our free prior informed consent is necessary or mining development in the north could become a very expensive failure:"

Background:
..
The KI Chief and Council stopped Platinex from mining exploration twice in our traditional territory. The first time the Chief and Council stopped Platinex they were sentenced to 6 months in jail on March 17, 2008. The present $5 million dollar deal was a direct result that the Chief and Council stopped Platinex mining exploration again in August 2009. Chief Donny Morris stopped a Platinex float plane from landing at Neimeigusabins Lake on August 26, 2009. KI is planning to meet with the province on the Memorandum of Cooperation in the early New Year.

KI has also made submissions to the Ontario government regarding Bill 173 and Bill 191,
plus an Early warning and Urgent Action to the UnIted Nations Committee on the
Elimination of Racial Discrimination in February 2009. These submissions basically
highlight the many primary concerns that KI has with regard to existing northern
development policy by the Ontario government.
