AFN chief says First Nations 'open for business'

The Assembly of First Nations' new, youthful National Chief introduced himself to Bay Street yesterday, bringing with him a message that was not only conciliatory but downright solicitous.

"We're here to stay and we're looking for partners. We're open for business," said Shawn Atleo to a packed room at a breakfast event of the Toronto Board of Trade. The half-hour speech, on the theme of building native Canadian prosperity, marked the first time an AFN national chief had addressed the body, headquartered right at the country's financial epicentre.

Speaking with reporters after his speech, Mr. Atleo said, "Today was a signal to say to the Toronto community, 'You've got an incredible amount to offer by way of partnerships and direct support for First Nations success.' "
