OTTAWA, March 29 /CNW Telbec/ - While Arctic Ocean Foreign Ministers met in a closed door session, civil society organizations were outside, demanding a moratorium on new fossil fuel exploration. With a "leave it in the ground" oil slick banner, the Council of Canadians and the Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) delivered copies of an open letter sent to the Ministers calling for a moratorium.

The tar sands are the largest and most carbon intensive industrial project on the planet.

There is strong opposition within the Gitxsan community to a proposal being advanced in Treaty negotiations by the Gitxsan Treaty Society (“GTS”). It has been reported that a GTS delegation is set to meet Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl next month to lobby for its proposal that would see the elimination of reserve lands as well as the elimination of Indian Bands and government (the Gitxsan Alternative Government Model or “GAGM”).
